Simplified Explanation

A syrinx is a fluid-filled cavity within the spinal cord or brain stem. Symptoms include numbness, loss of bladder control, excessive tripping or clumsiness, and ultimately paralysis if left untreated. Motor control skills may be delayed due to pressure on the spine.

If the syrinx is progressing/growing and symptoms have developed, surgery is the only option. The most common surgery is a Chiari Decompression. Other surgical options include removing blockages if present in other areas, and shunting if necessary. Physical or Occupational Therapy may be required if developmental delays result.
